Helping doctors move Down Under đŠđș
At Messly, we keep a constant eye on what doctors search for on our blog, what is being discussed in Facebook groups that we moderate, and what questions we are directly asked about doctorsâ career options.
Weâve noticed a steady rise in interest for jobs in Australia and New Zealand, especially amongst doctors considering an F3 year "Down Under".
Itâs not hard to understand why: pay is significantly higher, hospitals are generally newer and more fully-staffed, and you get all the benefits of living in a sunny and exotic country thatâs culturally not too dissimilar from ours.
And of course this is set against the backdrop of an increasingly challenging environment for UK doctors, and the ongoing junior doctor pay restoration dispute.
We want to be the number one source of support and guidance for doctors who are exploring their career options. And weâre not doing enough to support those doctors who want to learn about their options in Australia and New Zealand
So we are pleased to announce two new projects which we will be launching.
1) Finding the best jobs for you
Finding out about jobs in Australia and New Zealand is harder than it should be.
Doctors whoâve successfully found jobs have often had to overcome a confusing and lengthy process, which includes:
đ multiple job boards (each state has their own), which are often full of jobs which arenât suitable for overseas doctors
đ applying directly to some hospitals, digging around online and in Facebook groups for email contacts
đ hoping that a friend can refer you somewhere
đ being pestered by recruitment agencies, who often only have the most remote roles that are far away from the big, coastal cities where youâve imagined living (and learning to surf đâïž)
As a result, it tends to be only the most stubborn and persistent doctors who successfully make it Down Under.
We will be sharing details of the best, currently available jobs which are suitable for you as a UK-based doctor. Everything will be reviewed and screened by the Messly team, and will include jobs from the best agencies and directly with hospitals and clinics.

â
As new jobs are added, we will share these first via email with doctors who've joined our newsletter. Youâll get first dibs on new roles that come out, and we wonât spam you with anything else. You can opt-out any time.
You can register for this by leaving your email address using this form:
Note: if you are already registered with Messlyâs locum-finding service and have that youâre interested in âInternationalâ opportunities, you will be automatically included in the newsletter.
We plan to expand this in time into a full job board, where you will be able to filter and search through live roles and apply from there.
2) Creating the best blogs, guides and resources
In addition, we will be writing the most comprehensive set of resources for doctors who are exploring their options in this area. Weâll take the same approach as we have with locum work, aiming to be wide-ranging and detailed and to answer every major question that you might have.
We will get started with:
đ helping you understand if Australia might be a good fit for you
đ breaking down the lingo around grades and specialties
đ explaining the annual recruitment timeline
đ opening your eyes over pay
đ explaining the visa and Medical Council registration processes
đ living in Australia
đ building a long-term career in Australia
Note:Â If youâre a doctor whoâs successfully moved Down Under and would like to contribute, you can contact chris+au@messly.co.uk
Much of this will live in our The Ultimate Guide to Working in Australia as a Junior Doctor đŠđș, which will be updated and refreshed as we add more.
All of this will be free to doctors, of course.
Bear with us as we find out feet in this new area, and please reach out if you have questions, feedback or would like to help!
